When Virgil Abloh‘s “Figures of Speech” exhibition opened at MCA Chicago earlier this week, sneakerheads immediately gravitated to the “AN ARRAY OF AIR”, 2019 installation which offers a look at some Off-White™ x Nike prototypes. We now have a closer look at the shoes that offer an interesting look at some of the design elements and concepts Virgil toyed with during the development of his lauded sneaker collaboration.
Described simply with the notes “All shoes Nike × Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh™/Nike shoes on tarp/Private collection,” the contemporary art pieces features scrapped iterations of the Air Jordan 1 and 4, Nike Zoom Terra Kiger 5, Air Force 1, Air Max 90, Vapor Street Flyknit and Waffle Racer. A look at the prototyping reveals Virgil’s obsession with deconstructed looks, descriptive detailing, transparent materials, exposed stitching and unique lacing choices.
