Converse Preps Expansive Chinese New Year Sneaker and Apparel Range
Commemorating the Year of the Rat with three shoes and stylized layering pieces.
Joining the Chinese New Year celebrations of Vans and adidas, Converse has prepped a timely capsule for the Year of the Rat. Comprising three classic sneakers and a selection of layering pieces, the goods repurpose Chinese tradition into variety of versatile pieces.
Classic Chinese papercraft informs the selection, as the shoes each incorporate a patchwork design atop the uppers. Dynamic pops of color grace the black Pro Leather while the similarly understated Chuck Taylor All Star 70 boasts even more contrasting hues, with contrasting panels of red, orange, yellow, blue and green playing across the textured black and grey uppers. Finally, the Jack Purcell yields a white base tone, offset by striking panels of blue and red, complete with bold piping.
The paper motif carries over to the accompanying garments: wrinkled paper-like vests in black and white each outline their mesh pockets with bright primary colors. Elsewhere, a red bomber jacket features papercraft-inspired prints and Converse branding on the rear, while tonal pullovers deliver subtle Chevron Star logos. Hoodies are offered in black or white, with the intricate prints from the rear of the bomber jacket emblazoned across the topmost panel and hood. “2020” branded tags grace the hems of each wearable.
Expect Converse’s Chinese site and stockists to receive the Year of the Rat goods on January 2.
Meanwhile, two soccer clubs — Real Madrid and Juventus — are also getting in on the CNY action with special capsule collections.
