Onitsuka Tiger’s 70th anniversary celebration continues as the brand gears up to launch the sixth seasonal installment of its commemorative capsules. Following collaborations with KYE, Christian Dada and more, the Japanese label has now recruited sulvam founder Teppei Fujita for a round of Tai Chi-inspired goods.
The limited-edition collection includes a reworked iteration of Onitsuka Tiger’s “TAI-CHI-REB” shoes, alongside a coordinating track top and pants. Fujita’s design concept revolved around the idea that “fashion is free,” leading to sporadically-applied threads and stitches throughout as representation of originality. “I [realized I] could maximize the attractiveness of both brands by destroying our fixed image in a good way,” explained the sulvam designer, referencing his own brand’s preference for raw hems and aggressive deconstruction.
Fujita chose black as the main base color throughout, contrasting each piece with various white and grey details. On the low-top sneakers, the leather upper has been stitched from front-to-back with light grey geometric lines, offering a subtle design update to Onitsuka Tiger’s heritage style. This sewn-together aesthetic is also translated to the apparel, with hanging strings scattered across the jacket and the pants as another nod to the notion of unrestricted style. Logos from both labels are printed across each piece, while black and white stripes line the sides to ramp up the sportiness of the look.
The sulvam x Onitsuka Tiger capsule is set to release on November 18 in select stores across the globe and at Onitsuka Tiger’s website.
Aside from its 70th anniversary fashion collections, Onitsuka Tiger has also enhanced its social media efforts, announcing Will Smith as its social media project partner in September.
