atmos and New Balance Present the Futuristic 2002R "Cybernetics Blue"
atmos’ third 2002R collab balances gray and blue via an ultramodern lens.
Update: After the colorway leaked earlier in the week, the New Balance 2002R “Cybernetics Blue” has officially been announced — and it turns out it’s an atmos collaboration.
atmos is no stranger to the 2002R of course, as it’s worked with New Balance on “2002RAT” and “Oasis” collabs in 2022 as well as offered store-exclusive colorways and remixed the 1906R, a model in the same vein as the 2002R. The “Cybernetics Blue” color scheme may appear on a heritage model, but it’s all about the future, drawing inspiration for its titular hue and accompanying campaign images from futuristic technology. Of course, there needs to be a human element with any tech, so this blue hue is balanced out (pun intended) with New Balance’s signature grey hue.

Original Story: Looking at New Balance’s lifestyle footwear roster, the 2002R has stood out throughout recent years as a go-to for sneakerheads. Recently, this has included a “Lovers Only” collaboration with DTLR and a fresh twist on the 2002R Mule courtesy of BEAMS. While the American sportswear brand continues to usher new silhouettes into the spotlight, the 2002R is continuing its successful streak with a “Cybernetics Blue” presentation of the kicks.
Tapping into a futuristic aesthetic, the colorway begins with its signature blue placed at the mesh base. Resting upon this, its intricate system of overlays sees the darkness from gray hues in suede offset by brighter leather panels in a sandy gray. Blue rejoins the look around the heel while the sole unit takes on a shade of off-white at the midsole and black at the rubber outsole.
Release for the New Balance 2002R “Cybernetics Blue” is scheduled to begin with a lottery via atmos Tokyo. Submissions begin on July 7 with its release date set for July 14 at a price of ¥22,000 JPY (approx. $152 USD). Stay tuned for release information regarding other regions.
