Since first partnering with ASICS in 2019, Awake NY has established a strong visual language for its collaborative footwear: one that combines ASICS’ signature bold hues and visible technology with proud NYC flair. The two have produced, in order, special iterations of the GEL-Kayano 5 360 (one of Hypebeast’s best shoes of 2019), GEL-Preleus, GEL-Kayano Trainer 21, and GEL-Lyte III, while Awake NY founder Angelo Baque has also worked directly with the brand on a GEL-Kayano 14. The partnership’s covered a lot of ground, but now it’s entering unexplored territory as Baque and ASICS have created a brand-new silhouette — the GEL-NYC, debuted with a duo of boldly-colored Awake NY collaborations.

The GEL-NYC combines the upper from the GEL-Nimbus 3 with the tooling from the GEL-Cumulus 16, and throws a dash of GEL-MC Plus V flair in the mix for good measure as well. Upon initial glimpse, the bright teal/pink and purple/gold color schemes across the silver mesh bases may not scream New York City, but their inspiration is decidedly Big Apple. The former is inspired by Cam’Ron and his famous head-to-toe pink fur photo from 2002, while the latter salutes the famous purple cassette tape of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, the seminal first solo album from Raekwon.

If you’re at Paris Fashion Week, you’ll be able to grab a pair at a special pop-up that’s located at 35-37 Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, 75004 and open from January 19-21, 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM CET. It’ll also hit the Awake NY webstore on January 20 at 11:00 AM ET. The MSRP is set at $160 USD.
