Awake NY’s ASICS GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 Is Dropping Later This Week
With all proceeds going to the Virgil Abloh™ “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund.
In light of the sudden passing of legendary designer Virgil Abloh, Awake NY founder and creative director Angelo Baque revealed that all proceeds from his brand’s forthcoming GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 collaboration with ASICS would be donated to the Virgil Abloh™ “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund and Angiosarcoma Awareness, Inc. – an org that focuses on research and raising awareness about angiosarcoma.
Ahead of its official release later this week, the pair have now offered up a closer look at one of the two sneakers dropping with a series of campaign images captured in the heart of Miami, the city Baque drew inspiration from for this release.
Incorporating the same tooling from the 2014 GEL-Kayano 21, this latest take preserves the nineties mono-sock design and houses classic GEL cushioning in the heel and forefoot to evolve the retro runner with performance functionality. Doused in “Grey/Silver” to serve as a neutral sneaker option for everyday wear, the capsule also features a teal iteration inspired by Miami’s architecture, which can be seen here.
The Awake NY x ASICS GEL-KAYANO Trainer 21 is dropping on December 2 alongside a capsule collection with NEON16 — a Miami-based artist incubator helmed by record producer Tainy — exclusively via UNKNWN. A wider release is going down on Awake NY’s website on December 4 where 20% of the profits will also benefit Virgil’s aforementioned fund.
