Kiran Kai's "Passports" Produced by Skepta Is a "Love Letter to London"
The latest tack from his upcoming debut EP ‘XYZ.’
Kiran Kai is back with another single from his upcoming debut EP XYZ after dropping off “Evade” featuring Daisy Maybe in February. The London-based producer and songwriter has just released his track “Passports,” tapping Skepta to help create the beat alongside himself and Ben Baptie and recruiting Bolade Banjo to direct the accompanying video.
Considered a “love letter to London” in a statement by the artist, the visual sees Kai as he sets out for a day of exploration throughout the city. He starts off in a retro ’80s BMW en route to the English capital before he finds himself hitting up raging parties and famous spots like Brixton Academy and the Greenwich Foot Tunnel.
“‘Passports’ explores hibernation as a catalyst for artistic transformation,” Banjo said of the video. “As a meditative practice, it allows for new insights to be gained from the world around us, previously unseen. Re-emergence allows for new roots to be sprung.”
Kai, who has worked with artists including 6lack, Mick Jenkins, Mahalia and more, is expected to release XYZ on July 3 via All Points. “The thing that inspired me to make it was the idea of not letting yourself be erased,” he explained of the project. “It’s supposed to be uncompromising, a way to express my thoughts and feelings and to do something which is only me.”
