Reebok is using the throwback Interval 96 as a way to show some USA pride, equipping the retro runner with a colorful white, red and blue palette. The shoe’s hues and striking star-equipped Vector logo make for an obvious nod to the United States — and this summer’s upcoming Olympic Games — but there may be a more niche inspiration in play as well.
Presumed inspiration aside, this Interval 96 presents an undeniably sporty look. A white mesh and leather upper makes for a crisp base, and the super-sized Vector logo stretches from heel to forefoot. This embellishment is split between two colors: a bright red towards the front and back, and a star-equipped blue in the center, making for an American flag-esque style. A blue tab connects both sides’ branded embellishments on the heel, and a giant embroidered Reebok Classic logo is present on the tongue. A white midsole with DMX cushioning and a classic gum outsole complete the look.
The hidden inspiration mentioned above? Reebok was the official apparel sponsor of the ‘92 US Men’s Olympic Basketball team — AKA the “Dream Team” — and each player wore a vibrant stars-and-stripes equipped warm up jacket, whose graphics are seemingly replicated on this Interval 96. These jackets were sported all thorough the tournament and up to the gold medal ceremony, in which Michael Jordan, ever the Jordan Brand company man, hilariously covered the Reebok logo on his jacket by draping an American flag over his shoulder.
This Reebok Interval 96 will release at retailers like Asphalt Gold on January 16. The MSRP is set at €99 EUR (approximately $110 USD).
