Nike Extends Retro Influence With Atletico Madrid Third Kit
With references to the team’s 1990s victories.

Following on from the latest Barcelona kit, Nike has now revealed the third jersey for Atletico Madrid. Similarly to the Barca kit — as well as Tottenham, Chelsea and Inter Milan‘s third kits — the design features a number of references to the 1990s, including a squared-off collar and Nike’s Futura logo.
Other features of the light blue kit include seven stars printed on the neckline as a reference to Madrid’s coat of arms, the word “Atleti” woven into the fabric and a dark blue trim on the collar and sleeves. The ’90s was an important decade for Atletico, as the club won its first La Liga title in almost 20 years in 1996. Speaking about the kit’s design as a tribute to this time, Atletico player Saúl Ñiguez explained that “everybody knows about the moments of success for our club during that era. The fans will enjoy this color being brought back. It’s nice to see how the design gives it that ’90s feel.”
