Nike CEO Announces Supply Restrictions for Air Jordan Retro Models
Releases of the AJ1 High have already been halved. Full-scale production cuts to begin in 2027.
During Nike’s Q1 FY2027 earnings call on October 1, CEO Elliott Hill announced a plan to significantly reduce the supply of Retro models from the iconic Air Jordan series, the hallmark of Jordan Brand.
The Air Jordan series once sparked fierce competition on every release date, with pairs trading at premium prices on the secondary market. As of 2026, however, it has become commonplace to see store shelves lined with various retro models, with some even sitting on discount racks. Addressing this decline in brand value, Hill officially acknowledged that the company had “oversupplied the market with iconic retro products” and declared a forthcoming reduction in supply.
According to published data, Jordan Brand released an average of about 10 Retro models per month over the past 12 months, from October 2025 to September 2026. In February 2026 alone (the month of the NBA All-Star Game), a staggering 19 Retro models dropped in just a single month. Combined with rising retail prices, it has become nearly impossible for consumers to collect them all. As retro models flooded the market, resale values plummeted, stripping the label of its exclusivity and status as the pinnacle of basketball footwear. In fact, this strategy of reducing the supply of retro models is already underway with the brand’s flagship silhouette, the Air Jordan 1 High.
2021: 20 colorways of the AJ1 High Retro released annually
2025: Reduced to 15 colorways annually
2026: Drastically reduced further to 12 colorways annually
(*Excluding archive collaborations like Union x fragment design, Swarovski, and Virgil Abloh, there are only 7 inline colorways)
While Hill did not specify an exact timeline for these adjustments, the supply restriction program is expected to be fully implemented starting in 2027. Jordan Brand aims to mark the end of an era of heavily discounted sneakers, returning to its roots as an elusive, highly coveted entity. Whether this strategic shift will reignite genuine hype within the sneaker scene remains to be seen, making the brand’s next moves well worth watching.
