The Balikbayan box inspires a collection centered on family, migration and connection.

Geometric Jumpman graphics and handwritten details translate De Guzman’s Filipino-American story into apparel.

Chicago-based Filipino-American visual artist and designer Louis De Guzman is joining Jordan Brand’s Artist Series for Fall 2026 with an apparel collection rooted in family, migration and the Filipino tradition of the Balikbayan box.

Titled around the concept “It Took This to Get Here,” the collaboration looks back to De Guzman’s childhood in the early 1990s, when he watched his parents pack boxes with photographs, Chicago Bulls T-shirts, shoes, trading cards and handwritten notes to send to relatives in the Philippines. Before video calls made long-distance communication immediate, these packages became a tangible connection between families separated by oceans — including De Guzman and his older brother, who was still living in the Philippines at the time. That personal history is translated into the collection through handwritten details inspired by names marked onto clothing tags, alongside the Jumpman reinterpreted through De Guzman’s signature geometric visual language and color palette.

The capsule carries that narrative across a practical lineup of everyday apparel, including men’s and women’s tees, an oversized fleece hoodie, women’s fleece crew, fleece pants, cargo/utility pants, an anorak and a unisex cap. Prices range from $32 USD for the cap to $170 USD for the anorak, positioning each piece as part of a broader wardrobe rather than a singular commemorative item. For De Guzman, the project reflects nearly four decades of family history and the values embedded in the Balikbayan tradition – connection, generosity and carrying one’s roots forward – while extending an artistic practice that frequently brings together his family’s immigrant journey and his own experience growing up as a second-generation Filipino American. The Louis De Guzman x Jordan Brand Artist Series launches October 9, 2026, via Nike’s website, Nike retail locations and select retailers globally.
