GoldLink Embodies the Bad Guy in "Joke Ting" Video Featuring AriPenSmith
Along with a cameo from Justine Skye.
After sharing an otherworldly visual for his track “U Say” with Tyler, the Creator in August, GoldLink has now followed up with an official music video for “Joke Ting” featuring AriPenSmith. The rapper is joined by his Diaspora album cover star Justine Skye throughout the flick, who teams up with GoldLink in a series of heists around Los Angeles.
In addition to Skye, U.K. actor Blakie from the popular new show Top Boy also joins in on the illicit acts in the video. Portraying himself as the bad guy is a peculiar concept for GoldLink considering some of the recent news surrounding him; the artist received intense backlash last month from rapper Anderson .Paak and more after sharing a lengthy Instagram post about Mac Miller, which insinuated that the deceased musician had adopted some of GoldLink’s musical style. He has since clarified his statements while performing at a concert in Germany.
Outside of the recent controversy, GoldLink’s Diaspora project has proved popular since its release in June. Barack Obama included the “Joke Ting” record on his “Summer Playlist 2019,” and “Zulu Screams” was listed as one of the “54 Best Songs of 2019” by The New York Times. Notably, however, the project didn’t earn any nominations for the 2020 Grammy awards.
