7 Video Game Adaptations in Development That Could Define the Next Era of Prestige TV and Animation

Has the video game adaptation finally shed its curse? After years of stumbles, a run of breakout successes have proved that interactive worlds can survive the jump to prestige screens, and the floodgates have opened. The slate in development reads like a fantasy wishlist: Henry Cavill‘s long-gestating Warhammer 40,000, Kratos and his son reborn for Prime Video, the Assassin’s Creed adaptation finally rolling cameras, and Sophie Turner suiting up as Lara Croft under Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Animation is pushing just as hard, with follow-ups to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Arcane alongside a fresh Ghost of Tsushima series.

What unites them is a particular kind of tension — each carries enormous expectation from fanbases that have waited years, and each knows the margin for error is razor-thin. Henry Cavill has spent decades painting Warhammer 40,000 miniatures and waiting for exactly this. Prime Video’s live-action leap into the 41st millennium is the most talked-about adaptation nobody has actually seen, a grimdark passion project that has lived in pre-production for over three years with Cavill attached to star and executive produce. Footage still doesn’t exist, yet the anticipation refuses to cool. Every scrap of news, every financial briefing from Games Workshop, sends the fandom into overdrive, proof of how badly this audience wants the Imperium rendered at prestige scale. The challenge is enormous. Translating a universe this vast and this bleak into sustainable television demands time, money and a writers’ room that respects why fans have obsessed over this lore for generations. A release date is yet to be announced so for now, the war machine idles. Whether the payoff justifies years of held breath is the only real question.

God of War

If you ask gamers which PlayStation adventure most deserves the prestige treatment, one of those characters who typically tops the polls is Kratos. Prime Video’s new God of War series is tapping into that sentiment – a new series, this one based on Kratos’ Nordic adventure, that breathed a second life into the franchise by making this rage-fueled Spartan into one of video’s most silently heartbreaking dads. Although diving into the Viking age of Midgard over Kratos’ brutal past in Olympus (where the original godly carnage all started, of course) was a decision that has divided the fanbase, both God of War and its sequel captured the heart that made the god-and-son story one of the most universally enjoyed beyond the controller. Now, that audience eagerly awaits the Amazon interpretation as filming resumes this October – setting a potential landing on screens closer to 2028 following the recent re-casting of Kratos. The whole thing now relies upon how well Prime captures the tender with the brutal-and frankly, get one side of that balance wrong and the internet won’t go easy.

Assassin’s Creed

Revealed a full half-decade ago in 2020, the high-octane live-action Assassin’s Creed that sets a collision between the Assassins and templars into bold historical periods finally rolled before cameras in March 2026. From Westworld writers-producer Roberto Patino (who has joined Chernobyl helmer Johan Renck on series, where Patino and David Wiener share creator, showrunner, and EP credits while Renck directs), the property, with games spanning as far back as Ancient Egypt all the way up to medieval era England, lends itself wonderfully, if perilously to a dynamic tale that, when it has historically botched things (see Justin Kurzel’s failed 2016 Assassin’s Creed film with Michael Fassbender). Now that the new show and story has come around that crucial stage of being placed at the center of production with, per our reporting, an estimated 2027 availability on the horizon, maybe Brotherhood can pull an impressive achievement and do justice to a game narrative a century in the making.

Tomb Raider

Only few gaming heroes are as iconic with crossover appeal as Lara Croft and Prime Video clearly thinks it has a winner here. For starters, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is developing and co-showrunning Prime Video’s first attempt at translating the archaeologist to live-action television in the US. Alongside that impressive coup, we’re looking at Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner strapping in to take up the role of our globe-trotting icon. Honestly, taken in isolation: dream. Waller-Bridge’s wit, character-centric approach applied to one of video games most enduring icons-sign me up. The anticipation is so high here, which inevitably creates two sides to the same coin. The show began principal photography in January 2026, and its shoot paused briefly in March for a minor injury to Turner before resuming; the result of which has created a familiar state of suspense for major adaptations as fans hover over social feeds in anticipation of first footage. What has the project remain near the top of every prediction list is undoubtedly the immense talent already attached, coupled by how ready we are for this modern, complex take on Lara that extends beyond a sex icon/action figure mold. There is massive potential here now that Prime Video has made it a tangible project.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Follow-Up

Edgerunners did something rare in 2022. It took a game with a rocky launch and gave it one of the most emotionally shattering animated stories of the decade, sending players flooding back to Night City in the process. So the confirmation of a follow-up from Trigger lands with real weight. Details are now surfacing, from a Fall 2026 window to four new leads, and the original’s gut-punch ending gave way to a fresh cast rather than a direct continuation. The uncertainty of the story is part of the appeal. Fans trust Trigger’s kinetic, neon-soaked style to deliver another self-contained tragedy set in the same merciless city. This isn’t a mainstream juggernaut in the mould of Fallout, and it doesn’t need to be. The anticipation here is intense and specific, coming from an audience that considers the first season untouchable. Living up to David and Lucy’s story is a tall order. If any studio can, it is the one that broke hearts the first time.

Arcane Spinoff

Arcane completely rewrote the bar for what an animated extension of a video game is capable of-combining visuals that would make your jaw fall to the floor with a story that felt legitimately rewarded for its acclaim and fanbase. Its finale made spin-offs feel like a must, and Netflix has now confirmed that at least one is definitely on the way within the larger world of Runeterra, whether it catches up with beloved characters from Piltover and Zaun, explores other parts of the wider League of Legends world. Whatever it looks like, one thing is certain is how carefully it’ll be judged. It took years and a massive sum of money and resources to get Arcane to where it got, so the chances that the sequel chapter is imminent or particularly cheap is minimal. The audience would rather wait than have the bar lowered. That wait itself is an anticipation-the ultimate compliment a fanbase can pay its creative team is utter faith that they know what they’re doing. Post-2026 feels right.

Ghost of Tsushima

The Ghost of Tsushima world by Sucker Punch was always clearly fit for a life on screen in animation form, and Crunchyroll have confirmed its destiny with a 2027 animated series. Instead of rehashing the lone adventures of Jin Sakai, this adaptation will instead draw from Legends, the multi-player portion of the original game-thus allowing for new characters and a greater freedom within the desolate, wind-battered feudal world, fitting nicely into the medium of animation where violence, beauty and mythic weight can be achieved without the constraints often placed on their live-action counterparts. Fans of the original series will likely be filled with high expectations, as its quality and adoration of the original setting mean that the bar has been set so high for its atmosphere alone-something the games were just as celebrated for as their combative skills. However, if done well, it may be seen as the best animated adaptation of the year. Crunchyroll clearly see the potential too — now for the wait until 2027.
