Turning its focus back on one of its most iconic eyewear styles, Oakley is now preparing to bring back its progressive OVERTHETOP frames. The return commemorates the 20th-anniversary of the unique, disruptive design’s debut at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia and would have marked the end of the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Oakley famously put its innovation to the test in Sydney when Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Ato Boldon debuted the OVERTHETOP in the Men’s 100-meter race. Images of Boldon wearing the unusual eyewear became one of the Games’ most memorable images and one of the most iconic moments in Oakley history.

The 20th-anniversary release has been created using the original mold and introduces a new “Precious Mettle” color option. The revolutionary stemless design features a gradient color treatment that fades from aged gold to silver and bronze, an ode to the Olympic games and the athletes that have the mettle to push through and overcome adversity. The wrap-around is constructed with O Matter™, a frame material for durable, lightweight comfort, and fitted with Oakley’s leading Prizm™️ Lens Technology, designed to enhance the color and contrast of vision.

Serving as the last products to be created with the original 2000s mold, only 20 units of the Oakley OVERTHETOP “Precious Mettle” will be produced worldwide. Each pair will also be stamped with a unique serial number to mark its importance.

Priced at $2,000 USD, the Oakley Overthetop “Precious Mettle” will be available August 7, 9 a.m. PST exclusively online.

“Twenty years later, I still remember the rush,” says Ato Boldon, four-time Olympic medallist in Track and Field. “Wearing the Oakley OVERTHETOP in Sydney was an iconic moment in my career, and I can’t thank Oakley enough for pushing the boundaries and continuing to create eyewear that allows athletes to perform at their best on the world stage.”

“When creating new products, our goal is to find a solution to a problem our athletes are facing,” said Brian Takumi Vice President of Product Creative at Oakley. “The OVERTHETOP was born with the purpose of minimizing pressure points and reducing bounce created by force, specifically in our Track and Field athletes. We knew the design was very unique, but we never expected all the attention we received from around the world– the product truly created a global moment.”

In case you missed it, doublet builds on its signature eclecticism with its FW20 collection.
