Prolific Producer Knxwledge Returns With Smooth, Soulful Instrumentals on '1988'
Reuniting with Anderson .Paak for the first time since ‘Yes Lawd!’
If it’s surprising that Knxwledge has released his first full-length album through Stones Throw in five years, that’s only because the man is consistently dropping new music. Since his critically-acclaimed Hud Dreems, released in 2015, and today’s 1988, the Los Angeles-based producer has kept himself and his fans busy. He’s dropped one-offs, an entire album with Anderson .Paak and another full of all remixes. He’s also crafted five installments of his warped instrumentals underneath old Meek Mill freestyles, and that’s only touching the surface.
Today, Knxwledge returns with a new “Makeitliveforever” visual featuring animation by Rhymezlikedimez to coincide with 22 tracks for an expansive new solo effort. He even sneaks in a NxWorries joint-venture on “itkanbe[sonice]” with vocals from Anderson .Paak. Emotional cuts like “don’t be afraid” and “[bc]tm_s not promised” craft a narrative of gratitude, and offers up a soundtrack that can even be considered soothing given the current unprecedented times of self-quarantines and isolation. Tinged with 90’s nostalgia, other song from the GRAMMY-nominated producer like “Do You” add addicting funk and jazz inspirations into the mix. Song titles like “Learn / Howtocope” are timely reminders to keep calm and carry on, all while the sounds can help with some escapism.
