Freddie Gibbs Performs "Cataracts" and "Soul Right" in Vevo's Ctrl Live Concert Series
Two standout tracks from his critically-acclaimed ‘Bandana’ project.
Freddie Gibbs and Madlib‘s second collaborative project, Bandana was undoubtedly one of HYPEBEAST’s Best Albums of 2019. The two showcased just how much their signature chemistry had grown over the five years in between Piñata and their latest record. The two even recently shared the Bandana Beats instrumental album (for which you can revisit every obscure sample used on Madlib’s latest).
Today, Gibbs teamed up with Vevo’s live performance series Ctrl to give skillful one-take renditions of the triumphant “Cataracts” and passionate “Soul Right”, each displaying why Gibbs continues to be one of the most lyrically skilled rappers in the game today. His Vevo Ctrl appearance follows what NPR called their best Tiny Desk Concert of the year back in December where he was accompanied by Madlib and El Michaels Affair, a funk band from New York.
Strong visuals played an especially important role for the rollout of Bandana as Freddie, Madlib and frequent collaborators Nick Walker and M. Corey Whitted introduced an entire ‘MADGIBBS Cinematic Universe.’ The three part series started with “Crime Pays”, a video that caught up with Gibbs on a Zebra farm hiding cocaine in shipments of hay. “Giannis” followed with Freddie conspiring secret drug deals on a Sea-Doo while the third and final installment, “Half Manne Half Cocaine”, featured an Eric Andre cameo appearance. A stand-alone drug-fueled funk ensemble-inspired “Gat Damn” video capped the impressive performative run.
