Is Sony trolling Marvel?

Leading up to the digital release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Sony Pictures has released a new trailer spotlighting Peter Parker’s other alter-ego, The Night Monkey. The moniker — coined by his best friend Ned — made its debut during Parker’s trip to Europe with his classmates, where he tried to avoid suspicion that he is in fact Spider-Man while battling the Elementals.

In the clip we see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in his new black suit, with the tagline, “When night falls, a new hero rises. The night belongs to the monkey.”

The trailer arrives following the controversial split between Sony Pictures and Disney, which shocked fans around the world. Following the break-up between the studios, jokes started pouring in that Marvel should make The Night Monkey part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, since Sony controls the rights to Spider-Man. Whether or not this is Sony’s way of trolling Marvel, it marketing behind it remains clever and arrives at an appropriate time.

Marvel Studios and Sony struck a unique deal before the release of Captain America: Civil War which allowed the webbed hero to appear in the MCU, as well as for Marvel to co-produce solo films alongside Sony. However after the fallout, Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man will no longer appear in the MCU.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is available digitally now, and on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD October 1.

In related news, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man has been reported to appear in Black Widow.
