For Portuguese artist VHILS, Shanghai holds a special place in his heart. Having recently concluded his latest exhibition, “Realm,” at Shanghai’s Danysz Gallery, the world-renowned muralist produced a short film highlighting his love for the sprawling metropolis.
Directed by Jose Pando Lucas, “Realm in Shanghai” serves as a dialogue between VHILS’ street portraits and the inhabitants themselves, in what they have dubbed a “nomadic poem.” The video piece features a mesmerizing soundtrack and slow-motion footage, narrated by a women reciting a poignant poem in pure Shanghainese dialect. You’ll also see much of the work that VHILS exhibited and produced while in Shanghai, work that he calls “aesthetics of vandalism.”
