Ford Enlists Headless Robots to Finish Autonomous Driver Deliveries
Meet Digit.
Ford and several other automakers are jumping into the autonomous driver game, however, completing deliveries at the door has remained an issue. Ford is utilizing a two-legged robot named Digit from Agility Robotics to get deliveries from self-driving cars and at the front door of a customer’s home.
The robot folds in the back of the autonomous car and unfurls itself into a bipedal humanoid, except it doesn’t have a head. Digit can carry up to 40 pounds, can travel across uneven terrain and survive a bump if it should ever fall down. The vehicle will have a detailed map of the surrounding area of the delivery and communicate it to Digit so it knows where it’s going. They both can even deduce the best pathway to travel to the door.
