Kaytranada Drops New "DYSFUNCTIONAL" Single & Teases Next Album
“It’s gonna be worth the wait. You’re gonna see a evolution of Kaytranada.”
For his first all-new original release of the year, Kaytranada links up with talented sister-duo VanJess for a new single titled “DYSFUNCTIONAL.” Kaytranada’s latest composition receives its debut courtesy of Beats 1 and Zane Lowe, who premiered it as the “World Record” for today’s episode of his show.
“‘Dysfunctional’was really this song about not calling me back and everything, or not, a relationship that doesn’t work and you want this relationship to work, but it’s not gonna work. And that’s what I’m aiming for on this song,” Kaytranada told Zane Lowe earlier today, revealing the back-story behind his new track. “I came out with this little hook that you hear in the beginning. That’s me singing, and I just had this idea of whatever. Not calling me back. What’s up with that? And VanJess came too, I think, like couple hours later and then just did what they did perfectly. Like in one take.”
Most notably, Kaytranada also provided some fresh insight into a subject his fans have been eager to hear about for many months now: the full-length follow-up to his 2016 debut album, 99.9%. Although he was a bit vague in his responses to Zane Lowe’s questions about his next LP, the 26-year-old producer did tease a shift in his sonic direction and appears to be devoted to giving listeners an exceptionally-impressive listening experience.
“I’m working hard on this record. Everybody’s been asking, ‘Yo, where is it? Where is it?’ But you know, I’m just working on it hard,” Kaytranada says. “It’s gonna come out soon and when it’s gonna come out, people are gonna shut up and enjoy … It’s gonna be worth the wait. You’re gonna see an evolution of Kaytranada. It’s not gonna be just what it was. It’s gonna be more than what it was. So that’s how I see it and that’s how I hear it.”
