A Solar-Powered Desert House Makes the Perfect Retreat for a New York Couple

To escape the hustle and bustle of New York City, a retired couple set their sights on a secluded space in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and enlisted Marc Thorpe’s architecture firm to bring the minimalistic home to life. Sitting on five acres of land, the solar-powered house was designed with a neo-brutalist approach for an ecologically-friendly design.

Standing at 2000-square-feet, the project is comprised of two bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom and dining and living quarters. Thorpe constructed the residence out of concrete, leaving openings for large glass doors and windows to invite in sunlight and ventilation. An integrated ladder has been built on the west side of the house, allowing the owners to venture to the roof as they please. Inside, the stripped-down aesthetic continues with uncomplicated Moroso + Casamania furniture in a strict grey and black palette, which was also created by Thorpe. Monocrystalline solar panels power 100 percent of the energy in the building, with any excess power making its way back into the main power grid.
