Mac DeMarco Directs Iggy Pop's New Music Video for "Sonali"
Mac DeMarco brings back The Lizard Man for the ‘Free’ visual.
Six months after releasing his most recent studio album Here Comes the Cowboy, Mac DeMarco is stepping behind the scenes for his latest offering, teaming up with the legendary Iggy Pop to breathe new life into the 72-year-old icon’s Free track “Sonali.” DeMarco takes a unique, left-field approach to directing the official music video for Iggy Pop’s “Sonali,” inserting his original Lizard Man character into the visual’s narrative.
Specifically, Iggy Pop’s clip for “Sonali” follows The Lizard Man — played by Tommy Midnight — as he travels to meet up with his girlfriend, complete with an outrageous, pink-fur-adorned convertible leading the charge. For The Lizard Man’s romantic interest, DeMarco reached out to his real-life partner Kiera McNally to play the role.
“When you’re a bit of an outsider, you can work with someone who’s more ‘inside’ but you have to gauge the time and commitment carefully and make sure you don’t fall into orbit,” Iggy Pop recently explained to NME. “Because these people always have a lot of people stuck in orbit around them … Part of the thing about punk is that everybody knew right from the get go that against the machine, it was hopeless. There has to be a sense of hopelessness about it, which is a terrible thing and I don’t want to sit here and advocate hopelessness but … there’s gotta be some of that.”
