HBO and The Weeknd‘s upcoming drama series The Idol has been confirmed as an Official Selection Out of Competition at the 2023 Festival de Cannes.

The news was confirmed by the festival itself, with Cannes Delegate General Thierry Frémaux stating that he anticipates The Weeknd’s personal appearance at this year’s festival as the artist is a regular patron; he revealed that The Weeknd has a history of previously attending Cannes covertly to screen the selections competing.

It remains to be seen how many episodes will premiere at Cannes.

The Idol stars The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp as Tedros and Jocelyn, with the likes of Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Ramsey, Suzanna Son and Hank Azaria also joining the cast. “After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?” the official logline reads.

The 2023 Cannes Film Festival takes place May 16 to May 27.

Elsewhere in entertainment, Harry Potter series has been confirmed at HBO Max.
