This Fall/Winter 2021 fashion season, South Korean brand WOOYOUNGMI presents its abstract interpretation of Bernard Werber’s mind-expanding essay, Le Livre Du Voyage.

Set in a nocturnal woodland, the FW21 collection invites viewers to enter into an enchanted forest to experience a season founded in mythology and fantasy. The ominous woods set the scene for a dialogue between the natural and the supernatural and guides the collection’s transformation from the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Werber’s essay largely inspires the hypnotic approach to the brand’s visual aesthetic, informing a fantastical reimagining of the dress codes associated with the great outdoors. The collection includes a myriad of earthy tones, including mocha browns, olive beiges, deep greens, and dark purples, which contrasts with shocks of ice blue and tangerine. In a whimsical play on furs and skin textures, these amplified details are exemplified in a faux shearling geo-print puffer jacket and a fluffy faux pony-skin ice blue parka.

The collection also mixes classic patterns with new finishes, including the Prince of Wales check tailoring and a rayon-blended corduroy that augments the classic countryside textile with a pigmented red gilet, ice blue anorak, and quilted flight jacket in the same colorway.

Performance and functionality are prevalent in the collection, including a durable olive-green aviator suit and a comfort-centric suit. The comfort sentiment is echoed in oversized outerwear and knitwear that obscures the body’s silhouettes.

In case you missed it, Y/Project FW21 is a masterclass in asymmetry.
