Taking a more relaxed tact than Fall/Winter 2020, Japanese brand elephant TRIBAL fabrics is channeling nostalgia with its Spring/Summer 2021 offering. Designer Ryōta Kimizuka thought back to his youth, where he spent warm weather seasons palling around the now-abandoned Namegawa Island and its local theme park.
Going back even further, Elephab’s SS21 offering draws from ’70s style and the vibe of Japanese City Pop, exemplified by the recent resurgence of songs like “Plastic Love.” Namegawa Island motifs accompany these themes throughout the collection, wherein Cuban-style shirts, signature bomber jackets and bondage trousers are reimagined in thoughtful textiles that recreate the weathered look of the forgotten island, like a custom polyester and leather accessories.
Elsewhere, reversible fatigue jackets, printed pajama-style pants and graphic hoodies reinforce the throwback motif, complemented by the label’s signature bondage and slit trousers in versatile tapered makeups. Small accessories like scarves and bucket hats lend an additional stylish edge to the proceedings.
