KangaROOS has crafted a special Runaway ROOS 001 “Save the Polar Bear.” With polar bears in danger of becoming extinct due to the arctic sea ice shortage brought on by global warming, this hand-crafted sneaker aims to bring attention to the creature’s plight in a visceral fashion.

Although the polar bear is generally thought to have white fur, its coat is clear and has air spaces that scatter light. Therefore, this Runaway ROOS 001’s cow suede upper is made of two different natural beige suedes: a light perforated style on quarters, collars, tongues and toeboxes, and a darker hue on the mudguard, midfoot overlay and heel.

Branding is handled by a light blue KangaROOS logo on the lateral quarter, a printed hit towards the collar and a supple tongue badge. However, the signature embellishment is present on the heel: a debossed graphic of a sorrowful polar bear that’s slowly melting away. This though-provoking style is continued on the insole, which shows a broken ice sheet floating on top of bright blue water. Both of these embellishments serve as reminders that the bears are quite literally standing on thin ice, and the time we have to save them is dwindling.

White midsoles and soft blue outsoles complete the look. Each pair comes equipped with three different lace options, and is packaged in a box that uses the same cracked ice print as the insoles. This drop’s charitable aspect has not been revealed, but will likely be announced soon.

The KangaROOS Runaway ROOS 001 “Save the Polar Bear” will release at retailers like 43einhalb on May 16, and is priced at €250 EUR (approximately $271 USD).

Moving from the tundra to the tropics, Nike‘s ACG Moc 3.0 is set to release in a “Tie-Dye” colorway.
