Issa Rae Stars as Gun-Wielding Stripper in D Smoke's "Lights On" Music Video
Actor Danny Trejo and G Perico also make appearances.
Coming off of his debut album “Black Habits,” D Smoke has released a music video for the track “Lights On” featuring SiR. Directed by Jack Begert of Psycho Films, the cinematic visuals see Issa Rae as a gun-wielding stripper, while Danny Trejo and G Perico take on smaller roles.
The music video plays out the dramatic narrative backwards, opening with the Insecure actress sitting in the passenger seat with Smoke and SiR. From there, the visuals document Rae’s exit from the strip club, where she is a featured dancer, before showing her robbing Trejo. “We wanted to tell a story without bias, that simply shows a series of events tied to an empowered woman who takes what she wants and is willing to face the consequences that result,” Smoke explained. “No one should judge how another makes ends meet. Keep the lights on.”
“Lights on” showcases Smoke’s bilingual lyrics and introspective storytelling. “But I heard you that hometown favorite/So turn around and shake somethin’ flagrant,” he raps. “And if I go home with your fragrance/Read about it in the papers.” The rapper has garnered attention after winning Netflix’s Rhythm & Flow show hosted by Cardi B, Chance the Rapper and T.I.
