Jordan Brand and beloved ’90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air have long been intertwined, with Will Smith notably rocking Air Jordans during the title sequence and throughout the show itself. This light-hearted piece of sneaker history has lead to the creation of a vivid color scheme dubbed the “Bel-Air” and several Fresh Prince-inspired silhouettes, the latest of which is the Air Jordan 5 “Alternate Bel-Air.” A follow-up to 2013’s Air Jordan 5 “Bel-Air,” the “Alternate Bel-Air” retains many of the bright hues and much of the vivid detailing proffered by its predecessor, but switches up the base for a fresh-yet-familiar look.
Uppers discard past grays in favor of a bright, angelic white. Signature midfoot and throat netting netting is done up in an icy translucent tone. Black tongues, eyestays and laces offer a stark contrast. Each shoe leans upon a different shade for the lion’s share of its colored accents — the right foot opts for neon red branded embellishments on the tongue, lateral side and heel, while the left shoe switches all three to neon green. Midsoles are split too: both use a purple base, but the P-51 Mustang-inspired shark tooth detailing on the forefoot swaps between blue and red on the left and right feet. Both are then brought back together with vivid sockliner patterns inspired by the whimsical outfits Smith’s character would sport. Clear Air Max units and colorful outsoles with more icy blue tones finalize the look.
Apart from the aforementioned original “Bel-Air” from 2013, the sitcom and its starring character have also provided direct inspiration for an Air Jordan 6 Rings and an Air Jordan 28 SE, both of which released in 2013 as well. The last Smith-inspired style to drop was 2018’s laceless Air Jordan 5 “Fresh Prince.”
The Air Jordan 5 “Alternate Bel-Air” is rumored to release via Nike SNKRS and select stockists on August 29. The MSRP is set at $190 USD.
