For SS20, WACKO MARIA Joins Basquiat's Estate, Rage Against the Machine, Tuff Gong and Sublime
A bevy of big-name collaborations.
Reliable Japanese label WACKO MARIA has honed its signature sleazy goods since 2005, never sacrificing approachable silhouettes or unmissable prints. Spring/Summer 2020 is a distillation of those values, amped up by way of several big name collaborators, including the estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Rage Against the Machine, Bob Marley‘s Tuff Gong, Sublime and Kinji Fukasaku’s Yakuza classic Battles Without Honor and Humanity.
Like previous collections, WACKO MARIA’s latest is packed with animal prints, sleek tailoring, sporty staples and revamped warm weather favorites, offering an array of particularly bold short-sleeved shirts, the Japanese brand’s forte. In fact, WACKO MARIA has already issued shirts emblazoned with Marley’s visage, but Spring/Summer 2020 also includes an array of Tuff Gong goods, celebrating Marley’s record label and recording studio.
Other prints honor Basquiat with all-over prints of the artist’s work, accompanied by RATM-branded shirts, sweaters and hoodies and Sublime, recognized by way of the classic sun logo (realized on T-shirts) and album art (executed on more short-sleeved summer shirting). The licensed graphic items are accompanied by WACKO MARIA’s own designs, which range from stylizations of Japanese oni to tie-dyed tees to window pane-patterned pants. Over-dyed hoodies, robe coats and beach shorts underscore the beachy feel, while leather jackets and Western shirts lend a rougher edge.
Stockists like SSENSE and HBX will receive WACKO MARIA’s new season in the coming weeks.
Elsewhere in Japan, BEAMS Plus rolled out a preppy selection for SS20.
