Beastie Boys and Spike Jonze Talk to Desus & Mero in Extended Interview
The legendary hip-hop group on their new documentary, quarantine and more.
Beastie Boys and Spike Jonze‘s new Beastie Boys Story feature documentary was initially planned to release through IMAX theaters but due to the coronavirus, it arrived exclusively on Apple TV+. The famous hip-hop group and director joined Showtime‘s Desus & Mero (known the world over as the Bodega Boys) for an exclusive 30-minute interview about the project where they revealed a number of behind-the-scenes stories.
Spike Jonze told the group that they aimed to film in IMAX for one important reason. “We shot it in Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. When we tested it in IMAX, it kind of felt like you were looking at them in the theater, like you were in this theater with them. If anyone took psychedelics when they went to see the movie, then they’d definitely feel like they were in there with them. That was the goal.”
Mike D talked about Spike’s experimentation, saying, “we’ve worked with Spike for so long that there were more things that didn’t make the cut that were more experimental and Spike pushing the limits. There was this whole fight scene at the end where Spike brought in these fight masters…”
Ad-Rock, Mike D and Desus & Mero also compared sneaker collections and their latest pick-ups during the quarantine. Other topics ranged from how the Beasties are holding up in self-isolation, their favorite breakfast cereals, and an unfortunate cycling accident that broke Mike D’s collarbone and led to the cancellation of a tour with Rage Against The Machine.
