Here's a Look at Samples Used in Tyler, the Creator's 'IGOR'
Spotlighting tracks from the ’70s – ’80s.
Released back in May, Tyler, the Creator‘s fifth studio album IGOR has been met with widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike, debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200. The album follows 2017’s Flower Boy and includes features from notable names, such as Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, Solange, Kanye West, and Jerrod Carmichael, whose parts have all been directed by Tyler whom self-produced the project in its entirety. Offering a close examination of the 12-track LP, one YouTuber has uploaded a video detailing a slew of original samples used in IGOR.
The video sifts through songs on IGOR in chronological order, starting with the first track “IGOR’s Theme,” which uses “Attention” by Bob Welch and Head West from 1970. Part of the next track “I Think” was a chopped up version of Nkono Teles’ “Get Down” from 1982, mixed with a bit of “Special Lady” by Bibi Mascel. “Running Out of Time” sampled “Hit It Run” by Run DMC and “A BOY is a GUN” borrowed sounds from “Bound” by Ponderosa Twins Plus One. Wrapping up the video, other songs on the album like “Puppet,” “Gone, Gone/Thank You” and “Are We Still Friends?” have been deconstructed with tunes by artists like Al Green, Tatsuro Yamashita and Part Time.
