'The Lion King' Leaps Over 'The Avengers' on the All-Time Box Office Chart

Over the weekend, Disney‘s The Lion King remake surpassed the Joss Whedon-directed original The Avengers from 2012 on the all-time box office chart, with the former now ranking seventh after making $1.65 billion USD and the superhero blockbuster dropping to eighth with $1.52 billion USD. The Lion King now only trails behind Jurassic World, which sits at sixth place with $1.67 billion USD.

Regardless of which movie comes down and which movie climbs up, Disney is still the real winner here. Both pictures mentioned belong to them, and as of now, the company owns 10 of the top 15 highest-selling movies worldwide. Disney has had its best year ever at the box office so far, raking in $7.67 billion USD as of July — and there’s still more in store for the company this year, as Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker have yet to hit theaters, potentially pushing the record past the $10 billion USD mark. Of course, much of Disney’s success this year can also be attributed to arguably 2019’s biggest blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame, which raked in a whopping $2.9 billion USD since its release in April, hoisting it as the highest-grossing film of all time, dethroning James Cameron’s Avatar.
