Avengers: Endgame Encore has returned to No. 1 at the domestic box office, finishing ahead of several new releases in its return to theaters. Disney and Marvel’s re-release of the 2019 blockbuster, which adds extra footage to the original cut, brought in $86 million USD worldwide over the weekend.
In North America, the film earned $26 million USD from 3,060 theaters, which works out to an average of roughly $8,500 USD per location. That’s a strong result for a film that has been available to stream at home for years. International audiences drove most of the total. Overseas markets added $60 million USD, more than double the domestic haul, bringing the global figure to $86 million USD.
Those numbers are well beyond what re-releases usually earn. “Re-releases rarely earn more than $10 million USD,” said David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe. Gross also pointed to the run’s value as marketing, noting that it helps build early buzz for what Marvel has coming next.
The next release is Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in December and brings back nearly the full Avengers roster for another fight to save the universe. With Endgame Encore posting numbers usually reserved for new releases, the re-release is an early sign of how much demand exists for Doomsday.
