The trading card market just witnessed a monumental transaction centered on Dallas Mavericks player Cooper Flagg. Early Friday morning, Cooper Flagg’s one-of-one Topps Chrome Update rookie debut patch autograph card officially sold for more than $8 million USD. This historic transaction took place through a Fanatics Collect auction and wrapped up after an intense bidding war that concluded with a total of 83 bids. The highly coveted piece of memorabilia carries the specific card number #DPA-CF and boasts flawless condition metrics across the board. It is officially graded as a PSA 10 GEM while also holding a pristine DNA 10 autograph grade for the signature.
The physical elements of the card hold a direct tie to the start of the young player’s professional career. This embedded patch on the card was taken directly from the Dallas Mavericks jersey that Flagg wore during his first-ever NBA game against the San Antonio Spurs on October 22, 2025. Flagg originally signed the card during the Fanatics Fest event in July before it was randomly inserted into a pack. From there, the item traveled an unlikely path to the auction block. A fan named Jason Williams of South Carolina originally acquired the card through a livestreamed trading card break. Williams spent a mere $515 USD to purchase a spot on a stream hosted by RhodyBreakers, a division of the retail shop Baseball Cards of Rhode Island. After successfully pulling the one-of-one card on the livestream, Williams consigned it to Fanatics Collect in August.
The final $8 million USD transaction smashed the previous record for a Cooper Flagg card sale by a massive margin of more than $7 million. Furthermore, the massive figure elevates the transaction to become the third-most expensive NBA trading card sale in history. Only two basketball cards have ever commanded a higher premium, including a 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman signed by Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant that sold for $12,932,000 USD and a one-of-one Michael Jordan and LeBron James 2006-07 Upper Deck Exquisite dual NBA Logoman patch autograph that previously cleared $10 million USD in a private sale.
Beyond the basketball market, the implication of this unprecedented hammer price cements Flagg’s debut patch card as a defining piece of hobby history. According to The Athletic, the sale makes Flagg’s card the fifth-most expensive of any trading card in history, officially topping a $7.25 million USD sale of a Honus Wagner 1909 Sweet Caporal T206 in 2022. Landing a modern rookie pull among the top five most expensive trading cards ever sold completely shifts the current boundaries of high-end collecting, proving that next-generation prospects can command valuations directly alongside established, legendary names like Honus Wagner, Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
