It’s easy to cast grey aside as an understated hue, but in 1980 New Balance was able to recast the tone as an iconic color amongst its offerings. Honoring the color’s cultural relevancy — both then and now — the Boston-based brand is releasing a two-piece, limited-edition collection, dubbed “Grey Day.” The offering celebrates grey’s connective power amongst New Balance’s global family, helping to foster a fearless state of mind.

Enthusiasts can choose between the classic 997 or it’s more technically-sophisticated successor, the 997S. While the classic retains the same constructive principles that cemented its cult status, the modern re-imagination of the silhouette is informed by new technology, such as the Sport sole unit and a streamlined structure. The new model carries the ubiquitous “N” branding whereas its counterparts trades the logo for the embossing of “New Balance MADE in U.S.A” on the sides. Whether moved by nostalgia or contemporary stylings, each shoe comes equipped with premium materials — pig suede, pebbled leather and mesh — and are, of course, covered in grey.
