While LeBron James‘ illustrious basketball career is no doubt a testament to his unrelenting drive, the many people surrounding him have also been instrumental along the way, with longterm friends and business partners Maverick Carter, Rich Paul, and Randy Mims being key to his story. Together, the Ohio natives comprise the “Four Horsemen,” setting the inspiration behind Nike’s upcoming LeBron 16 release.

While previous sneakers in the LeBron footwear range have also received the “Four Horsemen” moniker (including last year’s LeBron 15), this latest edition features defining elements that specifically reference the close-knit crew. For one, the knight chess piece and the number “4” is patched onto the tongue, taking the spotlight on the upper. Meanwhile, their hometown and initials have been stamped onto the insoles in square-shaped designs. The crisp black and white colorway throughout also makes obvious chessboard references, which is only underscored by checked details on the outsole to finish it all off.

Nike’s LeBron 16 “Four Horsemen” is set to release on May 23 from specialty retailers such as Sneakersnstuff.

In other footwear news, a PSG x Air Jordan 6 may be dropping this summer.
