Nathan Bajar Interprets Parents' Love Story in "Speedy Racerrrr" Visual
Stylistically channeling hit anime ‘FLCL.’
Filipino-American interdisciplinary artist Nathan Bajar has had a promising year. In July, the multi-hyphenate released his self-produced project Playroom, which featured 11-tracks that told intimate stories about his late father, family history, and more. Now Bajar has shared the visual for the project’s “Speedy Racerrrr,” a tender-hearted song dedicated to his parents’ story of love.
“The idea for the song came from both this picture of my dad and sister driving a go-kart and learning the story of how my parents got together,” Bajar shared with HYPEBEAST. “In the Philippines, my mom and dad were friends. My dad was attracted to my mom but she was in a relationship at the time. A few years later my mom and dad are living in the United States but on opposite coasts. My dad then took a crazy journey of planes, trains and automobiles from San Jose to the East Coast to be closer to her and court her.”
Musically, Nathan recorded all the instruments and vocals at his home, with the track’s outro being a recording of his father reciting Larry Graham’s 1980 love hit “One In A Million You,” one of his parents’ favorite songs. For the Kevin Christmas Gomez illustrated and animated video, Bajar drew on his favorite anime, FLCL, for stylistic cues, playfully interpreting his mother and father’s relationship.
