UPDATE (November 14, 2019): After sharing a poster and title for its upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants film, Paramount Pictures has just dropped the first trailer for the anticipated movie and it stars action hero Keanu Reeves. Check out the trailer and find the original story below.

Original Story (November 13, 2019): Nickelodeon‘s famed SpongeBob SquarePants TV series is set to receive a new feature film slated for next year. With the movie’s release just around the corner, Paramount Pictures has shared the project’s title along with a new poster.

In the promotional poster for the studio’s newly christened The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run film, a 3D SpongeBob Squarepants (Tom Kenny) and Patrick Star (Bill Fagerbakke) can be seen looking through binoculars, while the former holds a wanted poster for his trusty pet snail, Gary. According to ComicBook, the film is being described as a prequel to the SpongeBob SquarePants series, and will follow the titular character during his time at Kamp Koral, a summer sleepaway camp.

Directed by Tim Hill, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run arrives May 22, 2020 and also includes vocal talents from Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, and Reggie Watts in undisclosed roles. Hans Zimmer will score the film, while pop singer Cyndi Lauper will team with her co-writer Rob Hyman for more original music.

An additional TV series set to receive its own live-action feature film includes Rugrats, which Paramount has put on hold for the time being. The film was originally set for a January 29, 2021 release.

In case you’ve missed it, Paramount dropped an all-new Sonic the Hedgehog trailer which showcases the redesigned character.
