Mickey Drexler Tried to Get Amazon to Buy J.Crew
“The thing that these big companies need is creativity.”

Mickey Drexler, former CEO and current chairman of J.Crew, thinks Amazon should have bought his company in the wake of its acquisition of Whole Foods. “We went to visit some of his team members on that,” Drexler said of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in a recent interview. “And to me, it would have been an extraordinarily smart thing to do. I thought Walmart should have done it, too,” he continued.
“I thought Target should have done it. The thing that these big companies need is creativity,” Drexler said a deal would have given Amazon “a machine of style and taste in fashion” especially given the entities big push in developing in-house clothing brands. Drexler also stated that he would not enter a deal to sell J.Crew’s products on Amazon. He said the e-commerce behemoth would “own” the customer if such was the case, and could conceivably “take every bestseller and put it into their private label collection, which I think they would do.”
Amazon has recently been in talks with Warner Bros. to create a Lord of the Rings TV series.
