Anthropic Launches Claude 3, Its New Flagship AI Chatbot Family
Claude Haiku, Sonnet and Opus each offer a unique set of capabilities.
Anthropic’s Claude chatbot has never taken off with the public – at least compared to the popularity of ChatGPT – but that hasn’t stopped the company from continuously improving the AI‘s capabilities.
The inaugural Claude launched in March 2023, followed by a second-gen version in July. Anthropic has now rolled out Claude 3, a family of bots it describes as setting “new industry benchmarks across a wide range of cognitive tasks.”
There are three Claude bots: Claude Haiku, Claude Sonnet and Claude Opus. Each is geared towards different uses, which can get confusing if you’re simply looking for a run-of-the-mill chatbot.
Claude Haiku is billed as the “fastest and most cost-effective model,” capable of reading research papers and charts and summarizing the findings in mere seconds.
Claude Sonnet, meanwhile, is what most users will use for their workflows. It’s faster than Claude 2 at responses and will be one’s best bet for knowledge retrieval and automating sales.
The last of the three, Claude Opus, operates at the same speed as Claude 2 but employs a higher level of intelligence than Claude Sonnet, boasting a 95.4% accuracy rate in testing compared to Sonnet’s 89%.
Anthropic describes all of the Claude 3 bots as having fewer refusals to answer questions when they don’t know the exact answer, something users may experience with ChatGPT. The Claude 3 family is now programmed with a more “nuanced understanding of requests” and will answer virtually all harmless questions.
Claude Sonnet and Claude Haiku have already launched, available on Anthropic’s Claude website in 159 countries. Claude Opus is expected to launch sometime soon.
