King Charles Diagnosed With Cancer
The 75-year-old monarch underwent surgery for an enlarged prostate last week.
King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer at the age of 75. The news comes one week after the British royal was revealed to have undergone surgery for an enlarged prostate at a private clinic in London.
“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted,” the Buckingham Palace said in a statement. “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”
The type of cancer and the stage of cancer weren’t revealed but the Palace released a separate statement clarifying that it wasn’t prostate cancer. King Charles has already commenced a course of “regular treatments” and has postponed any public-facing duties for the time being.
“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the Palace said.
The reveal of the King’s cancer diagnosis was surprising to many, given protocol has historically kept details pertaining to the royal family’s health private. The Palace noted that King Charles wanted to share his diagnosis to “prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
King Charles assumed the throne in September 2022 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
