The New Denim Tears x Cactus Plant Flea Market Collaboration Explores American Racial Identity
Taking inspiration from James Baldwin’s ‘Another Country.’
Denim Tears isn’t afraid of collaboration. Over recent times, the Atlanta-born imprint has collaborated with the likes of Marc Jacobs, Dr. Martens, COMME des GARÇONS, and more. Now, the streetwear brand is continuing to collaborate with only the best fashion houses, as it links up with Cactus Plant Flea Market for a 14-piece apparel collection that explores American racial identity.
The collaborative capsule is titled “Cactus Tears” and takes inspiration from James Baldwin’s Another Country, a 1962-released novel in which which protagonist Rufus Scott, is a symbol of Black American suffering. This has led to the collection coming with many more layers than what might meet the eye. For example, the capsule aims to encapsulate a slew of the novel’s themes into the line, as Pan-African bandanas are dressed in smiley faces.
Meanwhile, the collection comes with a stand-out Cactus Tears tee; it’s designed with a graphic combination of the United States and the African continent — signaling the African Diaspora through the lens of Another Country. The high-quality approach to working with historical concepts doesn’t end there either; a mix of puff printing and embroidery shines a light on more Another Country influences, while oversized fleeces are included alongside a line of T-shirts to round off the collection.
