'Game of Thrones' Movie Reportedly in the Works at Warner Bros.
The forthcoming film set in George R.R. Martin’s literary universe is said to be in the early development stage.
Warner Bros. has been discreetly cooking up a new film set in the Game of Thrones universe. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that multiple sources have verified that a concept for a full-fledged theatrical release is in very early development.
George R.R. Martin, the mind behind the fantastical world, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2014 that he had wished to realize a feature film for his book series. Even the show’s creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss shared the wish, hoping to produce three feature films in place of a final season. Ultimately, HBO chose not to disrupt the ongoing success of the Game of Thrones series which produced a total of eight seasons running from 2011 to 2019.
However, since then HBO seems to have shifted its strategy, inviting a more fluid relationship with the box office. For example, the streaming service has been tied closely with Warner Bros.’ Dune franchise, with HBOmax being the first streamer to host the title post-premiere in 2021. In a few weeks from today, HBOmax will also release the highly anticipated Dune: Prophecy spin-off series, arriving on November 17.
As of now the proposed Game of Thrones production has yet to confirm a cast or settle on a screenplay, so it will likely be years before the feature film hits the box office. Stay tuned to Hypebeast for updates on the film and the latest TV and film news.
