WTAPS has unveiled its spin on the New Balance 998, originally released in 1993 and the first New Balance model to boast the signature ABZORB sole. The cult-backed Japanese brand founded by Tetsu Nishiyama in 1997 is known for moving rather discreetly, and its forthcoming 998 carries the tradition forward with tastefully subtle edits to the model.
At first glance, WTAPS’ updates to the silhouette may fly under the radar, especially as the brand has chosen to preserve New Balance’s signature silver-grey color palette and overall design. While the original 998 features embossed leather details, WTAPS opts for a more naturalistic snakeskin-like leather accent, best represented on the “998” embroidered tongue. Additionally, co-branded word marks are hidden inside the insoles, and a “WTAPS VISUAL UPARMORED” appears in a small understated typeface along the side of the suede heel counters.
Aside from the refined edits, the model respects the original model with its mesh toe box and collar, overlayed with pigskin suede panels that soften up the tech-forward style. Eyecatching patent silver details draw attention to the heel tab and the small N logo at the quarter panel.
The WTAPS x New Balance 998 will be available from November 8 via WTAPS web store and select retailers. Sales will be distributed via online lottery at all stores with the exception WTAPS® (W_Lab) KYOTO. The online lottery take place from Thursday, November 7 to Friday, November 8.
