For the latest video episode of Essentials, Hypebeast spotlights London-based producer and DJ Barry Can’t Swim as he geared up to make his debut appearance at the iconic Glastonbury Festival 2023.

For Barry (real name Joshua Mannie), he describes performing at Britain’s biggest festival, which this year saw the likes of Elton John play his last ever UK show and Central Cee and Dave deliver their first back-to-back set, was a moment destined to happen. “It’s mad because one of the first songs I ever put out was ‘Sunday at Glasto,’” he says. “Now I’m going to be playing on the Sunday. It’s a bit of a full circle moment.”

Much like any music lover, audio quality is of prime importance to Barry. Going from “rubbish headphones that were 60 quid” to now owning Sennheiser HD650’s he explains, “As soon as I upgraded to these, everything leveled up.” Going back to basics, however, a USB that stores all of his music is another essential item – a piece of trusted tech that he takes everywhere.

As well as the equipment that helps his professional life, Barry provides some insight into the must-have clothing and accessories that every festival-goer needs in their rotation. From a vintage print-inspired, relaxed-fit Christian Dior shirt to a beaded chain attachment for sunglasses, these will allow you to stand out and enjoy the music instead of worrying about your fit, your friends losing you in the crowd, or dropping your valuable shades.

But one accessory he highlights is Kopparberg’s creation of the world’s first ice bucket hat. Designed in collaboration with artist Bernardo Henning, revered for his bold brush strokes and vibrant palette, the multi-colored headwear piece features an innovative thermal lining allowing it to double up as an ice bucket – keeping your Kopparberg ciders cool “for like two hours, which is ideal.”

Mostly known for his upbeat jazz-infused dance mixes, Barry’s sets undoubtedly get hot when performing. This means he’s typically seen sporting a parred back look consisting of a plain white T-shirt, so accessorizing to add a bit of flair is key for the DJ. These include neckerchiefs as “it’s an easy way to bring a little bit of extra color to whatever I’m wearing on stage.” And the neck accessories don’t stop there. A pearl necklace bearing his “B” initial is not only an essential addition to his outfit but a constant reminder of home. “A sentimental essential for me, my pearls, which were given to me by my fiancé,” he explains.

As well as a portable charger to stay active and connected throughout the long festival days, protection for the sun-soaked afternoons is just as important to carry on enjoying the celebrations, therefore Barry emphasizes the necessity of sun cream and a portable fan which completes his essentials list.
