BEYOND THE STREETSCONTROL Gallery is set to unveil a new set of works by New York-based artist, Othelo Gervacio.

Entitled Mind Flowers, Gervacio will present a familiar series of romanticized floral compositions created in a dark and phosphorescent color palette. Inspired by 17th Century Dutch Master paintings, such as the works of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Gervacio will typically collect, photograph and then paint large hyper-realistic paintings of various florae that he finds.

“I have always been drawn to things and ideas that exude a dark beauty,” says Gervacio, “from the life-fleeting imagery of wilting flowers to the origins of melodic, yet heavy metal music. The cross-section of romance and tragedy has always been the coordinate at which a large portion of my interests lie, thus leading me to create work evoking melancholic emotions.”

Emblematic of his practice at large, Gervacio’s latest works meditate on the relationship between humans and flowers, reminding us of the growth, transformation, and decay intrinsic in the cycle of life. Mind Flowers will open on July 29 and run through August 26 at CONTROL Gallery in LA.
