Netflix has officially announced the first anime adaptation for the award-winning manga PLUTO which is based on The Greatest Robot on Earth arc from Osamu Tezuka‘s Astro Boy. Produced by GENCO (Sword Art Online) with animation production by Studio M2, the series is set to release later this year.

Defined as a suspense drama, the show takes place in a neo-futuristic world where humans and high-functioning robots live side-by-side in complete harmony. The plot follows a europol detective name Gesicht who attempts to find the culprit for a string of human and robot deaths that he suspects may have been committed by a rogue robot. Astro Boy or “Atom” is featured in the show as a highly developed robot — considered one of the world’s top seven robotic technological advances in science.

“I applaud the courage of everyone that has taken on the challenge of making an anime based on PLUTO. I am excited about the birth of this new series to win over people’s hearts. I hope that now more than ever, Osamu Tezuka’s message reaches the world,” says author Naoki Urasawa.

“PLUTO inherits the philosophy of Tezuka and does not merely convey a message of  anti-war, but reminds us that there is suffering on both sides… but still, the only remaining answer is peace,”  adds co-author Takashi Nagasaki.

Take a look at the Sneak Peak trailer for PLUTO above and stay tuned for more details to emerge in the coming weeks.
