A Four Season South Korean Remake of 'Breaking Bad' is in the Works
Some are criticizing the trend of remaking shows from other countries.
According to an exclusive report by Hankyeoreh, a South Korean remake of Breaking Bad is now in the works. Producer Park Bum-Hoon from production company JP E&M revealed that the remake will be directed by Lee Chang-Yeol and features multiple seasons, currently, four seasons are in the planning stages. Additionally, those involved are now in the process of finding a male lead for the remake of Breaking Bad.
The script for Season 1 has already been completed and though no roles have been cast and no network has been attached, the series is expected to air sometime next year.
Premiering in 2008 on AMC, Breaking Bad chronicles high school chemistry teacher, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) who is diagnosed with cancer. To pay his mounting medical bills, White begins making and selling meth with his former student, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul). Ending after five seasons, the pop culture sensation went on to win 16 Primetime Emmy Awards.
News of the South Korean adaptation of has been met with mixed reactions, while some are interested in seeing the remake, others question how the series can handle drug use as South Korea has strict laws concerning illegal substances. Additionally, some are criticizing the increasing trend of remaking shows from other countries, rather than focusing on making original films and TV series within the Korean film industry.
