Google Acquires MicroLED Startup Raxium

The deal will reportedly aid in Google’s development of AR hardware.

Google has acquired Raxium, a five-year-old startup that develops microLED displays for augmented and mixed reality devices. While the exact terms of the deal are unknown, Google previously valued the startup at $1 billion USD, according to The Information.

Raxium hasn’t released a product for the commercial market, though MicroLED screens have shown great potential for usage in AR technology. Similar to LCD displays, MicroLED is inorganic and is intended to have qualities comparable to OLED displays, such as brightness and strong contrast.

The acquisition will reportedly help Google to integrate the startup’s MicroLED displays with its own AR headset. Reports from earlier this year said that Google’s headset, code-named “Project Iris,” will feature a custom chip and is slated to debut in 2024.

The alleged devices were described as resembling ski goggles and capable of operating without being connected to an external power source.
