Google‘s Googlebook is here, introducing a new class of premium laptop designed to sit at the center of the company’s Gemini push. Built on the Android technology stack and paired with desktop foundations from ChromeOS, the Googlebook is positioned less as a Chromebook successor and more as a purpose-built companion for Android phones.
On the hardware side, Google leaned on established laptop makers to deliver the first wave, with initial flagship devices coming from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. The builds skew premium across the board, using materials like aluminum, magnesium alloy and carbon fiber, and topping out with responsive touchscreens that reach up to 2.8K OLED. Haptic glass trackpads and backlit keyboards round out the physical package. Powering everything are high-end Intel and Qualcomm processors backed by dedicated NPUs rated at over 45 TOPS, a setup Google says enables snappy on-device performance and up to 14 hours of battery life. There’s also a nostalgic flourish in the returning Glowbar, an exterior light strip that sweeps to show battery level and animates when Gemini is active.
The bigger idea is how deeply the laptop hooks into an Android phone. Because Googlebook runs on a shared Android foundation, signing in migrates a phone’s settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages over with end-to-end encryption. From there, a trio of features keeps the two devices in sync: Continue On lets users resume phone tasks straight from the laptop taskbar, the Files app surfaces phone files and photos without emailing attachments around, and Cast My Apps streams individual phone apps into a desktop window for quick actions like grabbing a one-time code.
Gemini itself is threaded throughout the experience. Magic Pointer pulls the assistant to whatever’s on screen with a wiggle of the cursor, acting only when asked and switching off on command. Rambler, positioned beside the Quick Insert key, turns spoken thoughts into structured, ready-to-share writing complete with headers and checklists, even across multiple languages. Create My Widget rounds things out, generating custom desktop widgets from plain-language descriptions.
Beyond the AI layer, Googlebook is pitched as a full computing platform. It pairs the desktop-class Chrome browser and its extensions with millions of Android apps, many optimized for larger screens and mouse-and-keyboard input, and it runs native creative tools like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and CapCut. Streaming apps including Netflix and HBO Max support offline viewing, gaming spans thousands of Android titles plus a complimentary year of GeForce NOW, and developers get a full terminal environment alongside Google’s Antigravity AI agent platform. Underpinning all of it is the same security architecture as ChromeOS, anchored by the Google Titan hardware root of trust and, in a laptop-category first, a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor running an isolated Linux environment.
Pre-orders for Googlebook are open now via the Google Store, Best Buy and other select retailers, with devices hitting shelves starting October 4 in the US and October 5 in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia.
